Why Keeping A Journal Could Change Your Life

Writing requires us to think through the why’s and the how’s. When we sit down with a blank sheet of paper and begin to write out our thoughts, we are forced to think through our process on a deeper level. The discipline forces us to answer the difficult questions of “why,” “how,” or “why not?” The answers to these questions are not just helpful as we move forward to repeat successes and avoid mistakes, they can be therapeutic as well.

When there’s a gap between who you are and who you intend to be, you are incongruent and unhappy. You’re torn, mentally exhausted, and regretful. You always slightly feel like a failure to yourself. Journaling daily is the most potent and powerful keystone habit you can acquire. If done correctly, you will show up better in every area of your life. The problem is, most people have tried and failed at journaling several times. It’s something you know you should do, but can never seem to pin down.

As you work to incorporate journaling into your life, remember to take this journey one day at a time. Patience and consistency are crucial in forming new habits. Begin writing daily the same time of day, first thing in the morning or before sleeping. The intention of sitting to write every day will compel your mind to manufacture and recognize progress. It is a bold plan. And you’ll likely miss days. But don’t let that stop you. Commit again to write the next day.
